EDITING SERVICES

A good editor not only works with you to help make your current work better, they give you the tools and knowledge to help you become a better writer for all future work. As an editor, Jackie’s focus is always on education and collaboration, with an honest but kind approach.

Jackie has worked as a Lead Editor for a copywriting agency, co-edited the 2023 edition of Turbine | Kapohau, works with individual clients across the globe in a variety of capacities, and is a member of yinfluence editorial, a Trans-Tasman editorial collective who work exclusively with PoC, Queer, and neurodivergent authors.

Having worked with clients across the globe, Jackie is familiar with both British (including NZ, Australian, and Canadian) and US English standards. She works with Fiction as well as Non-Fiction across Adult, YA, and MG age ranges. While open to most genres and spice levels, Hard Sci-Fi and High Fantasy are not her areas of expertise.

Please note:
All rates in USD and subject to market conversions.
Clients are required to pay a 15% booking fee upon signing contract of work, with the remainder invoiced upon completion or as agreed. Card payments are processed by Stripe and subject to a 2.9% card processing fee.

BETA Reading

Beta reading is an early-read of your manuscript (usually second draft or more), looking at big-picture elements such as plot, pacing, and character development.

Service includes:

  • A letter addressing issues or concerns

  • A completed beta reader questionnaire (if supplied)

Cost: $15 (USD) per hour

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final stage before publication, focused on catching print errors.

Service includes:

  • Tracked change copy edits

  • In-line comments

Cost: $10 (USD) per 1,000 words

LINE EDITing

Line editing involves looking at your work on a sentence-level and suggesting edits that improve language, clarity, flow and pacing, while maintaining your voice.

Line editing is usually performed before copy editing, which is more concerned with ensuring your work adheres to the house style guide and is grammatically correct, though Jackie will also point out any copy issues if necessary.

Cost: $20 (USD) per 1,000 words

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITing

Developmental editing is a big-picture overview of your work and focuses on elements such as plot, structure, character development, and flow, highlighting all the strengths and weaknesses, and making suggestions for how to improve the work.

A developmental edit is best utilised once your manuscript has gone through at least a couple of drafts and before professional line or copy editing.

  • A detailed letter addressing issues or concerns

  • One follow-up video or voice call following review of Jackie’s edit

  • Access to Jackie via. email for four weeks following return of work

Cost: $35 (USD) per hour

Query packet assessment

When querying agents, you want to make sure you’re putting your best foot forward, not only with your pages but your query letter and supplemental material.

Service includes:

  • Tracked change line and copy edits on your query letter, synopsis, summary, and sample pages

  • In-line comments

  • A detailed letter addressing issues or concerns

  • One further review of materials

Cost: $50 (USD) flat fee

STYLE GUIDE creation

When working on a series, you’ll often want a style guide to make sure any future editors adhere to the same rules (eg, grammar, language choices, specific spellings, numerical style choices).

Service includes:

  • An editable style guide specific to your work

Cost: $10 (USD) flat fee

Mentoring

Sometimes, you need more than just an editor — you need a mentor, someone who will keep you accountable and help you get your work to where you want it to be.

Mentoring is especially great for those who’ve been working on a project for a while and just can’t seem to get it to the finish line, or those who have a short-term goal (eg, a university course deadline).

Service includes:

  • Monthly video or voice call throughout duration of mentoring period

  • Access to Jackie via email and text throughout duration of mentoring period

  • Developmental editing of work

  • Line and copy editing (if required)

  • Proofreading of final work (if required)
